How Much Sleep Does a Baby Need
How much sleep a baby needs varies by age and by baby. Little Nap uses starting daily ranges of 14–17 hours at 0–2 months, 12–16 hours at 3–5 months, 12–15 hours at 6–11 months, 11–14 hours at 12–23 months, and 10–13 hours at 2 years and older. Those figures are first estimates for the app, not a requirement every child must meet, and not medical advice.

How Little Nap uses daily sleep ranges
The ranges sit on the same age stages as wake windows. They give the first days a language for “about this much in 24 hours” while personal logs are still thin. Little Nap does not fail a baby who lands outside the range, and it does not award a baby who lands inside it.
The 7-day graph is how you see actual totals. If a day is 11 hours in a stage whose starting range begins at 12, the graph will show 11. That is a record, not a diagnosis.
Sleep amounts by Little Nap age stage
0–2 months start at 14–17 hours with 45–75 minute wakes. 3–5 months start at 12–16 hours with 90–120 minute wakes. 6–11 months start at 12–15 hours with 2–3 hour wakes. 12–23 months start at 11–14 hours with 3–5 hour wakes. 2 years and up start at 10–13 hours with 4–6 hour wakes.
Typical nap lengths used inside the engine are about 45, 60, 75, 90, and 90 minutes across those stages. They help time a suggested nap against bedtime. They are not a daily nap quota.
- Compare the logged 24-hour total to the stage range as context only
- Read nights and naps together so the total is complete
- Expect newborns to look “behind” a tidy chart and still be fine
- Ask a clinician if totals, feeding, or waking worry you
Why a logged day beats a generic hour target
Hour targets get used as pressure. A tracker should reduce that pressure by showing the week you actually lived. Little Nap’s free layer is the log and the graph. Premium windows answer “when next,” not “did we hit 14 hours.”
Twins can need different totals on the same day. Independent profiles keep those totals from being averaged into a number that helps no one.
When sleep amount is a clinical question
Poor feeding, poor weight gain, breathing concerns, or a baby who is very hard to wake are not chart problems. Contact a qualified professional. Little Nap will not interpret those signs.
How Much Sleep Does a Baby Need questions
How much sleep does a baby need according to Little Nap?
Starting daily ranges are 14–17 hours at 0–2 months, 12–16 at 3–5 months, 12–15 at 6–11 months, 11–14 at 12–23 months, and 10–13 hours at 2 years and older. They are estimates, not requirements.
Do these hour ranges include naps and night sleep?
Yes. They are daily totals. Little Nap’s graph adds completed naps and night sessions so the logged day can be compared with the stage range.
What if my baby sleeps less than the Little Nap range?
The range is a starting estimate, not a pass-or-fail line. If you are worried about sleep, feeding, or waking, contact a clinician. The app cannot assess health.
Does Little Nap change the range automatically as baby gets older?
The stage is based on the age you enter. As age crosses a boundary, the starting wake window and daily range change. Personal logs still influence predicted windows.
Little Nap provides estimated sleep tracking and rhythm guidance. It is not medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Contact a qualified clinician for health concerns.
